Mental health is one of those topics we are willing to talk about….when it is not directed at us, even though we all struggle sometimes. I’d be worried if you didn’t honestly.
Having the right people in your corner can give you some sense of peace and mental space to get through the hardest moments.
Being in a community helps us to build confidence, trust, and the ability to ask for help with people we can rely on daily.
[caution side track ahead]
But, being in a relationship with the Holy Spirit is infinitely more helpful than people give Him credit for. He gives us hope and increased faith that we will be carried through the stuff we can’t handle on our own.
Truthfully though...... we were never supposed to experience even the easiest things on our own! We are meant to be in relationship with God our Father, God in Jesus, and God the Holy Spirit in the good times and the bad.
In John 16:13 it states,
"When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth, for he will not speak on his own authority, but whatever he hears he will speak, and he will declare to you the things that are to come." ESV
The Holy Spirit was always meant to intercede and interpret what we cannot perceive in our own humanness. I do my humanly best to always remember to wait for the the Holy Spirit to prompt me speaking when I am counseling and guiding someone. There are times, I hear "be quiet and wait" and when I give someone an uncomfortable pause, they finally get the chance to say what they were holding back. There are other times where I wait not only for the best advice to give but for the right question to ask.
Usually people know the answer to their own life problems, they just need the time, space, and support to get them to that level of realization where the Holy Spirit can step in and make all things plain.
I laugh when I remember and read the verse from Ecclesiastes 7: 29:
This is all that I have learnt: God made us plain and simple, but we have made ourselves very complicated. GNBUK
We do though, we make things very complicated when God has already given us the directions to His heart and plan. We just have to listen more intently.
As a mentor and coach, this is where I hope to help people find the power within themselves (to be clear I am talking about Holy Spirit) to make the positive changes they need to live out their plan and purpose.
[let's get back on track]
Returning to the original idea of mental health, finding a counselor or mentor that holds your same beliefs is truly a blessing for your well-being. I’ve gone to a Christian counselor and it was such a different experience to be able to get counseling in a holistic manner that included my faith.
I am on pins and needles studying and learning in my Clinical Mental Health Counseling program. Even though it is not focused on Christian counseling, I’m excited to be that person for someone one day in a clinical setting whether they want to ask for help with or without the Christian aspect…although, I will still pray for all my clients no matter what their beliefs are or aren't.
Because, you can't get to the mind without going through the heart.
For now, mentoring and coaching is super fulfilling. I love working with my students and their families, as well as with families I connect with personally. I’m grateful for those that trust me to be a guide in their life. Thankful for the people supporting me on this journey, you truly are my heart.
