Maslow is not a 1, then 2 step process.

As we move into the new school year, reflecting on Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs is vital even if we have been educators for 20+ years. In my experience, while many students need our support in the lower tiers, it is possible for them to benefit from experiencing belonging in the classroom and on campus. Accomplishing and achieving success before meeting their safety or physiological needs in the higher level tiers is possible.

As you begin to plan your classroom management strategies, try to incorporate how you will accomplish the follow suggestions:

  • follow a consistent routine

  • “Meet & greet” every student every day

  • Prepare students for upcoming changes and endings in lessons or units

  • ensure endings are positive

  • work with other teachers or staff to help build trusting relationships

  • Name feelings and acknowledge anxiety

  • Provide reassurance and opportunities to try again

  • Recognize that all students (and adults) need emotional support

How will you ensure student KNOW they belong, are valued and loved? Can you share a lesson that helps you to lay the foundation for this culture?
